Physical Description Cyrin Xanth, at first glance, might not seem like the kind to stand out in a crowd. He is relatively short and perhaps a bit younger-looking than he really is. However, his bright smile and excited eyes, along with the way he carries himself with barely restrained energy, give him a presence larger than his stature. He is prone to gesturing and movement as he speaks, and while some find his enthusiasm infectious, others might find his touch of manic expression exhausting. The spots running down the side of his face and body identify him as a Trill.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Both Cyrin and Xanth possess brilliant minds, and now combined through Joining, he could even be described as a genius. He has an intense need to learn and experience things, not just a desire, and rushes headlong into life with the enthusiasm and sense of near-immortality often associated with youth. He is easily excited and prone to both over-explaining and becoming somewhat obsessive when encountering new experiences, experiments, or phenomena that capture his interest.

As an officer, he leads with that same enthusiasm and sense of wonder. Cyrin is quick to encourage and praise, and slow to discipline. While he understands protocol as a theoretical concept, he frequently forgets it in practice, preferring a more personal approach to his interactions with others. He can be quick to use someone's name rather than their rank, even if they are his superior. His casual approach to leadership can at times make his teams somewhat chaotic, but it is rare for anyone under his command to feel ignored or unappreciated.

Driven by an insatiable curiosity, some might perceive Cyrin as highly ambitious due to how much he pushes himself to work and learn, but this is more accurately a byproduct of the same enthusiasm that permeates all aspects of his life. He works hard, studies constantly, and expands his knowledge and skills even to the point of exhaustion, and on more than one occasion he has been ordered to rest by a medical officer. While not truly manic, as his behavior generally does not lead to serious disruption in his duties or personal life, emotional regulation is not his strongest trait.
Character Attributes Strengths
Physical:
Quick reactions and quite agile, while he doesn't have the greatest stamina he is just as fast on his feet as he is with his thoughts.

Leadership:
Naturally high-energy and encouraging, he helps maintain momentum within a team and often boosts morale through his enthusiasm and inclusivity.

Intellectual:
Exceptionally intelligent with high honors in astrophysics, exobiology, and exoarchaeology, combined with a rapid, pattern-driven mind that excels at connecting complex and unfamiliar data.

Weaknesses
Physical:
Pushes himself too far too often, and when the exhaustion hits it hits hard.

Leadership:
Can be inconsistent with discipline, delegates poorly by trying to be involved in everything, and creates unintentional chaos.

Intellectual:
Hyperfocus, over-explaining, and unintentionally ignores boring but important procedural data.
Ambitions Career advancement is not high on his list, though he will accept promotions and accolades as they come. He is primarily focused on scientific discovery and advancement, and on providing Xanth with the most exciting, exploration-focused first lifetime possible. This extends into his personal life as well, including making friends and possibly forming romantic relationships.
Hobbies & Interests Despite his smaller stature, Cyrin is a fan of martial arts and practices a number of different styles to help him stay physically fit and, in the off chance it is needed, able to defend himself in hand-to-hand combat. Judo is his preferred method, as redirection and evasion suit him well when up against more physically imposing opponents.

Holodeck programs of all types can lure Cyrin in, especially those that are humorous or allow him to roleplay as someone entirely different. Group scenarios that he can share with others rank highest in his preferences, and perhaps surprisingly for someone who pushes so hard in duty, he is quick to avoid anything work-related during holodeck recreation time.

As a personal hobby, Cyrin likes to collect various artifacts and mementos from the places he visits and missions he goes on. These are set somewhat chaotically throughout his quarters, alongside uncountable PADDs full of scientific journals, papers, and his own research notes.

Personal History Growing up on Trill, Cyrin Veyl was raised in a highly disciplined household, with expectations strongly enforced by his parents. Being Joined is the highest honor in Trill society, and less than one percent of Trill ever become Joined. Driven from a young age to study hard and excel, he was a dutiful son who never rebelled or resisted, instead consistently performing well in his academics and quickly proving himself a prodigy.

He attended university on Trill from ages 16 to 20, earning his first accolades in exobiology. Through grueling testing and evaluation, he was ultimately selected for Joining.

Xanth was a highly curious young symbiont that had never had a host before. It was eager to experience the world beyond the pools, with no concept of discipline or ambition beyond a desire to see what was out there. It was irreverent, eager, and consistently positive, often making jokes and humorous observations about the “two-legged cousins” among its fellow symbionts.

Together they became Cyrin Xanth, a true Joining in which neither Cyrin Veyl nor Symbiont Xanth exists independently anymore. They are now one person.

The result of this union was a complete contrast to Cyrin’s structured upbringing. The sudden expansion of perspective and personality led him to pursue Starfleet, as a way to explore the universe directly. It also fueled his relentless drive to study and push himself, as he attempts to match the breadth of experience now present within him.

His father is disappointed in his decision to leave Trill tradition behind, while his mother remains supportive. His brother looks up to him, while his sister is embarrassed by what she sees as a rejection of their culture in favor of Starfleet service.

At the Academy in San Francisco, Earth, Cyrin was gregarious and popular due to his enthusiasm and friendly nature. He never hesitated to volunteer or put himself forward for leadership opportunities, even though he still had much to learn about being an officer, particularly regarding protocol. He often encouraged his fellow cadets, took time to tutor those who struggled with concepts he grasped easily, and had no trouble asking for help with subjects he found difficult. Endlessly fascinated by the variety of alien species he trained alongside, as well as the academic challenges of Starfleet curriculum, it became clear early on that he would follow the science track.

At first, he struggled significantly with the physical demands of Academy training. He could not run far, struggled to complete a single pull-up, and exhausted easily. Nevertheless, every time he stumbled, fell behind, or embarrassed himself, Cyrin simply picked himself up and tried harder. He was eventually taken under the wing of a Klingon instructor, Commander K’Varak, who was amused by the small young man’s persistence and began assisting with his physical conditioning. K’Varak became a friend as well as a mentor to the Trill, even if he never quite managed to temper the enthusiasm of the young man. It was through this mentorship that Cyrin was introduced to martial arts as a way to channel his exuberant energy and build strength, despite the frequent visits to medical due to exhaustion and minor training injuries.

After graduation, Cyrin’s first assignment was to Deep Space 11, where he would spend the next five years. It proved to be a difficult posting for him, as he struggled with the sense of restriction that came with a stationary assignment, even though he was able to participate in a number of fascinating research programs. During this time, he applied his exobiology expertise to assist nearby colony worlds during an outbreak of a subspace-carried infection that targeted grain crops. He also pursued additional coursework, earning his honors in astrophysics while learning under senior members of the science department. Despite these accomplishments, he did not enjoy his time at the station. The department was highly structured and strictly disciplined, led by Commander Talen Rorak, with whom Cyrin frequently clashed due to his informal approach and lack of decorum. Although undeniably intelligent and dedicated, Cyrin remained at the rank of ensign for five years, largely due to his difficulty aligning with the expectations of his superiors.

Upon being promoted at last, Cyrin’s application to an older research vessel, the USS Celeste, was accepted. The ship was engaged in a two-year exploration mission focused primarily on archaeological expeditions throughout the Alpha Quadrant. During this time, the crew studied a range of ancient and extinct civilizations, including the Preservers, the Orions, the Tkon Empire, and the Iconians. Cyrin adapted far more naturally to this environment, and for the first time found himself growing not only in knowledge and experience, but also in leadership. He was eventually promoted to assistant chief science officer, where he led small teams on various field projects and archaeological digs.

When the Celeste returned to port at the conclusion of its mission and was decommissioned, Cyrin began applying for what he believed he was finally ready for: a senior science officer position aboard a mainline Starfleet vessel. With strong recommendations from his former crew on the Celeste, tempered by a number of disciplinary marks from his time on Deep Space 11, his application process became highly competitive and stretched over several months. Ultimately, he was accepted to serve aboard the USS Pandora. The name struck him as something of an omen, fitting his own chaotic tendencies, though whether it would lead to good fortune or trouble even Cyrin could not confidently predict.
