Mission:
Death in Paradise
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: current

"Please, wait here." Nurse Jassim told the crewman she's been treating, as she quickly went to pick up a dermal regenerator. "Just where did I put it?" she asked herself, when she noticed her boss walking by. "Ah, good afternoon, doctor."
"Good afternoon, Nurse." Alexandra nodded with a smile, as she watched her staff doing their work. "What a pleasant day we have."
"Pleasant?" the young Bajoran woman asked with a grin. "I've been listening to this guy complaining about his burned hand for an hour now. Mr. Mindo should really install some new safety protocols in engineering."
The doctor smiled on the Nurse's very true words, and left to get back to her office, when she saw a new, unfamiliar face walking in. "Hello. Can I help you?" she asked gently, as she looked at the short, dark-haired woman.
It was customary to drop by sickbay for the typical doctors handshake that confirmed whether fit for duty or not when transferring aboard, and today was that day for Yas. She had no problem with doctors - her brother worked at Starfleet Medical; although he was a special case in that he was already a pain in the ass before he became a doctor. Thankfully Edgar, her brother, wasn't involved today because it would have been a verbal squabble over trivial things like her obsession to her fitness and build. No, today it was a Doctor...Alves.
As the doors parted into sickbay, Yas immediately was greeted by a taller woman with dark brown hair. The warm smile, the doctors bedside manner as it was, was actually quite appealing to Yas as she stopped just inside the door and for a moment forgot why she was even their before snapping back to it. "Lieutenant Yasmin Cortez. I've just transferred aboard and wanted to check in."
"Ah, alright." Alex nodded with a gentle smile, as she realized what was the case. "I'm Doctor Alexandra Alves. Welcome to our little madhouse, the Pandora, Lieutenant." she said jokingly, as she directed Yasmin towards the nearest biobed. "Let me see you. In a minute."
It was always refreshing to have a doctor with a sense of humor, although given the tales she had been hearing around ship, Yas believed the madhouse reference was probably closure to truth than an attempted joke. Yas followed the direction given to the biobed and took a seat to wait for the doctor. She wasn't the most patient of people, especially when there was work to do, but needs must and all so Yas would grit it out.
Alex picked up a tricorder, and stepped back to Yasmine, starting to examine her. "I'm quite new on board, myself." she said. "Only been here for a few months."
Yas nodded at that statement as she was currently deep in that new vibe so wondered what it was like months after joining the crew, "What's it like?"
"Oh, just the usual overworked life of a ship's doctor." she laughed. "But this ship has a lot to offer. Great facilities for research as well as for recreation. You should visit our expanded rec deck."
"I will do that", Yas replied. She had memorized the layout but had yet to explore every area yet. "I heard there have been a lot going on recently?"
"Ah, yes." Alex nodded, as she scanned the Lieutenant with her tricorder. "We had a murder mystery on our hands, and a confrontation with the Breen. Not exactly boring."
A murder mystery? That sounded like a game but the hearsay floating around the ship definitely wasn't in that light. "I imagine that kept you busy doc?" Yas asked with a desire to know more. An attack, no matter the aggressor, always left a mark and that could be difficult to recover from. It was important for Yas not to put her foot into it and say something wrong, so gathering the facts would aid that.
"It did." the doctor agreed. "Hmm." she looked up when her tricorder read something unusual. "The reading shows you had a rib fracture just a few months ago." she said. "A dangerous mission, I guess?"
With a light smirk, Yas reflected on the memory that was spurred from the question, before nodding; "Kinda. Martial arts tournament at the academy. Somebody thought it wise to stick one to the instructor." It had kind of already been forgotten about but then again, she could remember the pain at the time from that one lucky shot.
"Ah, I see." Alex nodded with a grin. "Did you win?"
"The instructor had it coming." Yas smirked.
"You should meet Ensign Larose." the doctor suggested. "She shares you enthusiasm towards bone-breaking sports." she grinned. "I prefer football myself. There are moments when you want to break your opponent's nose, but the main goal is to outsmart them using strategic thinking."
Yas didn't mind sports that were less full of contact and more about the tactics, but she did prefer activity which was about blood, sweat, and maybe some tears - hopefully of the joyful variety. "I used to play football in my academy days, it was a good team bonding exercise. I guess these days I just like the more bone-breaking competition."
"I've played as well." Alex said with a proud smile. "I've actually been team captain both in high school and at the Academy." she elaborated. "But nowadays I let the younger generation have their day." she grinned. "My daughter, Veronica is the next wannabe soccer star in the family."
"A daughter that takes after her mother then?" Yas replied with a soft smile. She couldn't help in that moment but compare to her own relationship with her mother and how polar opposite they were. Her mother liked peace and tranquility and Yas craved the exact opposite. It was always an imagination of hers to think what it would have been like to be more like her mother.
"Too much so, I'm afraid." Alexandra replied with another grin. "She's smart, resourceful, and very active. But she's also quite stubborn, and wouldn't listen to others' advice if her life depended on it." she explained. "I realize now, just what my parents had to go through when I was her age." she laughed.
With a mutual chuckle, Yas nodded. "I know what you mean doc. My mother always wanted me to be a green thumb like her, even gave me a bonsai tree to support that. She will never give up in that hope." The tree was loved, as was her mother, but reading between the lines, Yas always knew her other had other reasons behind the gift.
"I must admit, I've never been a plant-lover type either." the doctor replied. "I tried to grow some hot chili peppers once. I didn't really succeed." she admitted. "My dad is a marine biologist. For me in my youth, it was always dolphins and whales."
“For me it was my mother’s green thumbs or my father’s psychology. I didn’t really want either and so paved my own path which brings me here.” Both her parents had parts to play in Yas being the woman she was today but she chose not to share these stories as her father in particular would get too deep about it.
"We lived on an ocean colony for a few years when I was a child." Alex explained. "My mom served as the colony's doctor. I guess, that's when the medical bug bit me." she grinned. "Are you in the security department?" she then inquired, seeing the Lieutenant's yellow collar and her interest in fighting sports.
“No, Operations.” Yas couldn’t help but chuckle at the assumption. It was easy to leap to that given her fondness for combat orientated activities. She knew a lot about security systems from an operational perspective but preferred to tinker with things than blow them up.
"Ah, sorry." the doctor apologized. "I thought... Well, okay. Just a minute and we'll be done." she diverted the topic. "It seems, you're perfectly healthy and fit for the job."
"Thanks doc, and...eh don't worry about it. I take it as flattering to be thought of security." Yas got to her feet in that moment and had to lighten the mood as she felt like she maybe was a bit too abrupt with her correction of her department. It wasn't really important to her as a job was a job at the end of the day, but she did believe in good relationships with the crew. With a soft smile, Yas moved things on; "About the rec deck - I might need a guide later if you are up for it?"
"Surely!" Alex snapped with a friendly grin. "My duty shift ends in two hours. Rec deck sounds a great idea."
"The Captain has given me a list of repairs to support Lieutenant Mindo with, but he also said to check out the rec deck so it seems to me that he was ordering me to do both...if I loosely interpret the latter." Yas was not about to be truant from her work or position, but she wanted to meet the crew as much as she wanted to get this ship all squared away and running optimally. A gander in the rec deck seemed like a worthy break location for Yas...in a few hours.
"Oh, well, Mindo is quite an interesting person." the doctor replied with a highly suggestive grin. "And certainly knows the rec deck much better than I do."
Lieutenant Mindo being described as interesting, given the tone in play, seemed to raise an eyebrow because she wasn't quite sure if it was a good or bad. She chose however to hold off any judgment and instead look forward to making her own impression when meeting the engineer. "Fair enough. I may well see you at the rec deck then?"
"Sure! See you!" Alexandra smiled, happy that she found a new friend.
"Absolutely. Thanks again doc, and see you later." Yas smiled and started to leave knowing she had done the formality of her medical when joining the ship, met a new crewmate and friend she believed more to the point, and lastly, that she had a social invitation which was always handed when joining a new crew period. She vacated sickbay and turned her attention to her next task which was Lieutenant Mindo and these repairs.
OFF.
