"Lieutenant Eiri Ashsy and Ashshy Retol Ayan?" the Ensign behind the transporter controls asked. "Wow.. you guys have the same name except switched."
Ayan chuckled and nodded. "You are correct, Ensign and actually, it's still my last name." He pointed to the ridges on his nose. "Bajoran... we use last names first." He smiled. "So Ayan is my first name."
Lieutenant Eiri Ashshy stepped off the transporter pad and held a hand out for his husband Ayan, who was directly behind him. Ayan almost skipped forward and eagerly took Eiri’s hand with a grin. The former counselor winced a little and Ayan gave him a concerned look. “Are you alright, love?”
Eiri nodded. He was half-Vulcan and half-Betazoid and sometimes being that caused difficulties. There wasn’t anyone in the room aside from the Ensign, but that didn’t make any difference to what the small half-breed could hear. It was deafening and it was all new minds. People he'd never heard or felt before. He always had a difficult time adjusting each place that he went. Eiri really didn’t inherit any gifts from his parentage. It was much more like a curse. The rush of emotions and images and words from everyone on at least two decks was overwhelming. After a few days he would become accustomed, as much as he could, but until then it was hard to think or concentrate. He squeezed Ayan’s hand tightly.
Ayan knew that his husband struggled. The tall Bajoran watched him with concern and then started to lead him out of the transporter room, nodding to the Ensign. “Come on. Let’s find our quarters and we can put our stuff down and give you a few minutes.”
“I have to report in, both to the Captain and whoever the Science Chief is. I cannot remember the name at the moment.”
“Doctor Brennan, love. They can wait just a few more moments, I think.” Ayan made short work of finding their quarters and before Eiri could even really get his bearings they were there and Ayan was looking through their bags while Eiri sat down in the dimmed living room.
“Do you know what time it is?” Eiri asked, one hand to his head, almost shielding his eyes from what little light there was in the room.
“Thirteen hundred hours… do you want something else to wear or are you going to put your uniform on?” Ayan came back to the living room from the bedroom and eyed Eiri seriously. “Your head is really bothering you… do you want to go to medical?”
Eiri shook his head. “No no. It is already starting to ease up and I need to change into my uniform if I am to meet with important people.”
Ayan already had his uniform in one hand and went to Eiri’s side and offered his hand for Eiri to get up out of the chair. When he did, Ayan took that opportunity to steal a quick kiss. “Then we’ll get you changed. I’m so proud of you, Science Officer. Come on, get those off.”
Eiri chuckled softly and shook his head. “What would I do without you?” He cooperated with Ayan and undressed and then dressed again in his uniform. “I had to be demoted first…” he pointed out.
Ayan scoffed. “It wasn’t the demotion that got you this position… it was that you’re smart and wonderful and smart…”
“You already said smart…”
“Oh! Did I?” Ayan asked coyly. “Maybe I think you’re double smart.”
“If I was so smart then how did I get demoted?” Eiri asked, curious as to how Ayan would reply.
“Well, I mean… I think I helped with that.”
“You most certainly did.”

Later that same day

Eiri stood on his tiptoes and tried to stick the small shelf to the wall. The diminutive counselor could only apply enough pressure at that height to get one side to stick and not the other. He squeaked a little as it swung down close to his head. “Ayan!”
“Yeah?” the tall Bajoran called, walking in from the bedroom, looking around the room until he noticed Eiri. He stepped forward quickly and grabbed the other side of the bookshelf, pushing it neatly against the wall. “Careful!” he reminded Eiri.
Eiri chuckled and grinned up at Ayan. “Thank you, love.”
Ayan smiled at his husband and nodded. “So are you happy with this?” he asked, starting to put books up on the shelf, and looking around their new quarters. “It’s our 6th transfer, so I’m not too attached yet, but what do you think?”
Eiri shrugged, looking out the window to the darkness of space beyond. “It is a ship, my love. Much like any other ship we have been on. It seems that there are quite a few civilians here though. So maybe you will not be too bored.”
Ayan walked up behind him and put an arm over the former counselor’s shoulders, looking out as well. “I could see myself liking this place,” he said, turning to smile briefly at Eiri. “I could definitely see myself liking this.”
“You will have all sorts of shops and places to eat,” Eiri remarked, planting a quick kiss on Ayan’s cheek and ducking under his arm to continue unpacking their belongings. He pulled a carefully wrapped clay pot from a storage container and smiled. “Your mother... She has the best taste in junk.” He giggled and set the pot in the middle of the living room table.
Ayan laughed. “Yes,” he agreed, pulling out his prayer scroll and mat and looking about the room. “I need to train you not to comment on everything she owns. If you even mention it, it’s yours,” he joked. He walked towards the far wall. “I’m going to set this up here, if that’s okay?” he said, putting the mat down facing the wall and going to hang the symbol.
“You can put it wherever you are the most comfortable, beautiful. And I like the things I comment on. I just do not really see the logic in giving away your possessions for no reason, but it must in some way make her happy.” Eiri shrugged again and started to work on tying his long, silver hair back from his face.
Ayan looked up at him and smiled. “She gave me away to you,” he said with a shrug. He hung the scroll before looking around their quarters. He nodded. “I like this.”
“I like anywhere where you are. As long as we are together, everything will work out.” He sort of snerked at Ayan. “And you say I have no faith,” he joked.
