Fick dangled his legs over the edge of the tallest place he could get to in the Jefferies tubes. He wasn't even sure what deck he was on anymore, nor what the timeline up here might be. He swung his legs in the open air, one hand on the long-runged ladder he had just climbed. The metal gave him some comfort. Its rough surface was cool to the touch and familiar. He stared down the tube, his feet still dangling.
The waves of depression had come on as the time had dragged on and they still seemed to be stuck in this place of non-existence. They didn't really know where they were, but they weren't where they had started, no matter how much it looked like that place. He missed K'Laus. Apparently, the Klingon was not with them. He missed his friends. The people below were some of his friends, but things were different, they were changing. As time slipped by they continued to change.
Sometimes he held out hope. Sometimes he could be his old, cheerful self. Sometimes he would spiral out of control into a dark abyss that matched the blackness they were surrounded with. He didn't like to let his thoughts get too out of control, but on days like these it was difficult. What if they never escaped? Was he going to spend the rest of his life on these three or four decks, with these people? When was it appropriate to move on? To accept his fate? Would they remain here until they died of old age? With all of the time problems he wondered if they would be trapped here forever. Never aging, never dying.
In some ways the prospect of never dying was almost the most terrifying thing ever, to Fick. He shook the questions from his head and sighed deeply, chewing on his bottom lip. If he tried to let go and just live his life with what he was given then what about K'Laus. Would starting something here in this place count as cheating if they ever made it back? Klingons were known to be practical, although K'Laus was a little bit of a different case since he wasn't raised by Klingons. Fick wasn't really looking for a relationship he was just speculating on what might happen if one developed here.
He felt sorry for his mother. Starfleet would tell her that he was lost in action and she would never receive a body. They would probably never even tell her why or how he was lost, just simply that he was. It would break her heart. His father would soldier on like he always did, but his mother would miss him. He would miss her as well.
He took a deep breath and opened the little pack he was wearing around his waist. Inside was a half a bar of rations. He pulled it out and nibbled on one end as he looked down the tube into the blackness at the bottom. He would just have to take one day at a time, as it was presented to him. It was what it was and no amount of complaining or sadness would change it any faster. Maybe they would get back. Maybe they wouldn't. He would at least try and make the best of the situation, even when he didn't feel like it.
