Wow it was warm in here!
Shae had just left the Box after an... interesting conversation with the Counselor and the Supply Officer, the latter of whom had managed to get her to drink two mugs of Warnog. Shae wasn't much of a drinker, she'd sip on a glass of wine at social situations or share a pint or two of a nice lager with her brothers when they met up, but these occasions were few and far between, and wine and lager had nothing on Klingon Warnog! Even still, Shae managed to keep herself composed throughout the evening's discussions only slightly tipsy, but as she began the trek through the ship to go pick up Aoife, like a delayed reaction the alcohol really started to hit her, and it was making her so dreadfully warm! Shae tugged at her uniform collar a few times as she walked along, and she even staggered a step or two, then stood still for a moment as she steadied herself, blinking in confusion as she struggled to remember where she was going; oh, right, to pick up Aoife from physical therapy... She continued walking, tugging at her collar once again before finally unzipping her duty jacket and shedding it altogether. She didn't even realize she was doing it, but she was so hot! Darned right she was hot! She was smokin', and the though got a chuckle out of her as she began to sway her hips as she walked, humming an Irish drinking tune about women with questionable morals, badly out of tune at that.
Shae continued her saucy saunter down the corridors, unzipping her Science teal shirt to relieve a little more of the warmth building up in her. Still humming, she saw an Officer in yellow walking the opposite direction. Offering a smile that could melt any heart of ice, a smile somewhat shy but still alluding to unspoken desires to inflame the soul, and she kept walking, teasing the neckline of her tanktop undershirt with her long fingers...
[Cailus and Shae's quarters]
Meanwhile, Cailus was doing something he hadn’t done in almost ninety years: sit on a couch, wear some comfy clothes and watch Martian football. He had a half hour or so to relax before Shae and Aoife came home, but for once, still worn out after the irritating episode with K’Laus in Engineering, he took the time for himself. Sure, the game was a four month old pre-recording, and sure, he had no idea who any of the players were, but that didn’t matter: it was football. Cailus had abandoned all his hobbies after coming out of cryostasis, but now, finally, he was starting to return to his old ways.
Which was why, when the door chime rang, he had to stifle a groan. Giving the screen a lingering last look as a player in thick green padding slammed into two in red, sending them flying like skittles in the low Martian gravity, Cailus got up and trod to the door. If some damned ensign was disrupting his personal time because they got a damned hangnail...
Instead, as the door opened, Cailus was greeted by a most bizarre sight: a burly older senior chief with what was unmistakably an underdressed Shae draped over his shoulder. Well, Cailus assumed it was Shae. The tail was a dead giveaway, and in any case, he was very familiar with her rear end.
“What the hell?” he asked, eyes wide in disbelief.
"I think she's drunk," the Senior Chief Petty Officer replied as he took a step inside. "I was on my way to the mess hall and she came right up to me. I could smell the alcohol on her breath when she started telling me how beautiful a person I was..."
"You pretend to be so mean, but I bet inside you are the nicest person in the galaxy, just like Cailus!" came the giggling retort from Shae. Then she saw Cailus. "Cailus! Cailus, hiiiiiiii!" she said, wriggling around on the man's shoulder to wave to Cailus.
"No I'm not; I'm a bastard coated bastard with a bastard filling," the Senior Chief replied grumpily, then took a step inside to deposit the inebriated Shae. "Now where do you want me to put her?" he asked Cailus.
“Bedroom,” Cailus answered, torn between amusement and exasperation. He followed them in, then watched as his girlfriend was dropped (none too gently) on the bed, bouncing on the mattress. “Chief, I owe you a drink. Or two. Did anyone see her?”
"Considering I couldn't find her shirt or her duty jacket when I came across her, it's anyone's guess," 'Chief' replied, though he was thwarted from saying anything else when Shae abruptly sat up to hug him around his mid-section.
"Thank you for bringing me home safely; you really are the nicest person ever," Shae said with a big smile.
"Dear god, man, how do you do it?" the Chief asked Cailus.
“She grows on you,” Cailus said affectionately. Then, despite himself, Cailus grinned. He just couldn’t help it, not when Shae was so damned cute, although that would surely fade when the inevitable hangover arrived. “Thank you, Chief, we owe you. You can leave now...uh, Shae? It’s time to let him go.”
"I'm touching your creamy center...." Shae said as she rubbed her hand over the Chief's stomach.
"She damn near farts rainbows and sunshine, don't she..." the Chief remarked as he peeled the Chameloid woman off, only for Shae to decide to latch onto Cailus.
"I love you, Cailus... I mean like really really love you! Like, I would maim and kill in the most horrible ways anyone who tried to hurt you kind of love!" she said as she nuzzled against her boyfriend. This statement evoked a raised eyebrow from the Chief.
"Right... I'm outta here," the Chief said uncomfortably, then hastily made his escape while Shae was distracted.
Tolerating the nuzzling with a reluctant smile, Cailus sighed...then winced as he took a proper whiff of her. While she might indeed fart rainbows, Shae utterly reeked of Klingon War Nog, a distinctive odor that Cailus knew all too well.
“War Nog?” he asked with exasperation. “Shae, didn’t anyone ever tell you not to touch that stuff?”
"But I'm Irish, it's rude to turn down a free drink!" Shae insisted.
Cailus chuckled, stroking Shae’s hair. He really was trying to upset with her, but it was impossible. “Rude, yes, but smart. There’s a reason the Irish never conquered anyone. Now, come on, you. Shower, then bed.”
Shae giggled at his assessment of the Irish, nodding in agreement. "Mmmm, I will shower if you come join me," she said in a chipper tone. She still had not yet let go of him.
Well, I should’ve expected that, Cailus thought wryly. He cocked an eyebrow, considering for a moment, then nodded towards the bathroom. “Okay, go. I’ll join you in a minute.”
"You promise?" Shae asked, looking up at him all innocently. "You're not just trying to get rid of me, are you?" she asked, pouting adorably.
Cailus snorted, crossing his arms. For heaven’s sake, how was he supposed to resist her charm when she looked like that while kneeling on the bed? “Like hell. You’d just hunt me down and get your revenge.” Softening his tone, he added, “Yes, love, I promise.”
Shae's face brightened with a cheery smile! "Okay!" she replied, then finally let go of Cailus and darted off to the shower. Or she tried to; her first few steps once off the bed were quite wobbly, but once the room stopped spinning she was able to make her way to the shower, shedding clothing as she went along. A moment later, he could hear the shower start up as Shae began humming another old bar tune.
How the hell do I do it? Cailus thought with bemusement, privately agreeing with the senior chief. Still he began scooping up Shae’s discarded clothing, and after a few moments of laundry and arranging for Aoife’s care, he began taking off his own pants. He really hadn’t been lying. As appealing as a joint shower was, Cailus knew he really should go pick up Aoife...but he also knew that in her current state, Shae really would hunt him down if he broke his promise.
[Later]
The shower had been all business; it was not for a lack of trying, but Cailus had been too much of a gentleman to take advantage of Shae in her drunken state. The clever Fox had even used the logic that they were already sleeping together, so what could it hurt, but Cailus just wouldn't take the bait and he made sure Shae actually got clean.
And so there they were, Shae sprawled out on the bed as Cailus toweled off her fur; the giggles had finally stopped and she was staring at him so intensely, like she was peering into his very soul!
"You take such good care of me," Shae said softly when he went to go get a pair of Shae's colorful fuzzy pajamas.
“That is my job,” Cailus said with an bemused raise of his eyebrow, laying out Shae’s pyjamas next to her on the bed.
At first, Shae didn't move to get just dressed, she simply watched him as he then dressed himself.
"Do you still see her when you close your eyes?" she finally said to break the silence, still just staring right through him. "When will there be enough room in your heart for you to be truly mine, and how long will I be allowed to keep you before time takes you away from me...."
Halfway through buttoning up shirt, Cailus stopped, looking at Shae with deep sorrow in his eyes.
“Oh, Shae,” he said softly, moving to sit on the bed. He reached out and stroked her damp hair, fierce guilt stirring within him as he peered into her exotic eyes. Cailus opened his mouth to say something, but what could he say? How could he explain losing the one great love of his life?
“You are my future,” he finally whispered, the words coming from deep within. “I know it’s hard, Shae, I’m so sorry...but I am yours. Always. And nothing in this universe can change that.” He smiled faintly. “Do you believe me?”
"I want to believe," Shae replied. "It's just so hard when I know that part of you still belongs to her..." Shae would have never said anything of this sort when she was sober, she never wanted him to feel guilty for his grief or rush him through the process! But at the same time, she couldn't help that she felt this way, and it seemed impossible to keep those feelings to herself at the moment. "For so long I thought I wasn't worthy of a normal life, finding love and having a family of my own... It's just my luck that the one person who has shown me that I am worthy still belongs to someone else."
The words, true as they were, ripped through Cailus. He’d always suspected how hard it must be for Shae, but actually hearing her say it...dammit. She truly deserved someone better, someone who could love her without reservation or baggage. Cailus breathed out softly, reading his answer in her eyes.
“She is my past,” he murmured slowly. “I can’t...I can’t promise that I’ll ever move on completely. I don’t know if I can. I’m so sorry, love, I’m sorry that I’ve hurt you.” Instinctively Cailus leaned in, touching his forehead against hers and closed his eyes. “All I know is that I want to share my life with you. All of you and me, whole and entire, together. I want to watch Aoife grow up into an amazing young woman, I want to be with you as you discover new stars...I want it all, Shae. Is that enough?”
"Does... does that mean that maybe... one day maybe we can be a real family? Like- like marriage and... maybe even... another child?" Shae asked hesitantly as she reached up to caress his cheek, with innocence returning to her eyes and hope to her voice. Truth was, she hadn't given marriage and family much thought in the past; she had known and accepted that she had been too immature physically to really think of such things, but she was no longer so under-developed, and while she tried to maintain her focus on Aoife and her career, the potential for marriage had been crossing her thoughts since that day in the holodeck when Cailus showed her the ring he had worn for Harriet. Maintaining a relationship as career Officers had proven to be challenging, but they seemed to be making it work! Was it too much to hope that when they were ready to make the leap to marriage that he would want to have that with her?
Cailus looked away for a moment, then chuckled under his breath. “You know,” he said, smirking slightly as he looked back at her, “I think it does. Damn. We must be out of our minds.”
Shae smiled, but it just as quickly faded. "Cailus, I don't like being drunk," she admitted with a pout. "I've said things you weren't ready to hear and I made you hurt... I'm sorry."
“It’s okay,” Cailus said with gentle understanding. “We all do things we regret after a few drinks. This is still pretty tame compared to the things I did while young and stupid. Besides, you should never apologise for telling me the truth.”
With that he leaned in again and kissed her forehead, before finally standing up. After replicating a glass of water, he handed it to Shae. “Drink this, then get some sleep. I’ll be here when you wake up.”
"I forgot Aoife," Shae replied, her ears drooping at that admission. But she did sit up and take the cup, quickly downing the water. Then she returned the glass to Cailus and finally decided it was time to unwrap herself from this wet towel and dress for bed.
Cailus waited just long enough to make sure Shae was comfortable before, finally, stepping away. Aoife would in all likelihood be quite grumpy by now, and understandably so. As he walked, however, new thoughts whirled in hus mind, considering and pondering a rather new concept. For once, Cailus wasn’t reflecting on the past with all its complicated aspects, nor was he thinking about the hum-drum of present day.
Now, Cailus’ mind turned to the future.
How the hell am I going to get a ring on a starship?
