Aeryn had finished her appointments for the day and was trying to find something to do to keep her mind off Tyson’s departure, she was sitting alone at a table in Pandora’s Box staring out of the window at the stars for once she’d chosen a stiffer drink to her usual and was sipping it as she’d sensed someone approaching the table.
She smiled as she turned to look, “Hello Mindo” she motioned for him to join her, “Feel free to take a seat, I could use some company.”
Mindo was neatly dressed in a blue collared shirt and khakis. It felt good to not have to wear a uniform for the next twenty-four hours, as he was finally given a break from Engineering, the transporter, and literally everything else. He and Nash had worked well as a team. Mindo thought Nash showed real command promise; Mindo however did not feel quite the XO type just yet.
Climbing onto a seat at the Counselor's table, Mindo beckoned to a waiter and asked for a bottle of bourbon. The waiter was not astonished by this request as Mindo's drinking habits had become well-known to the Box staff.
Smiling and turning his attention to Aeryn, Mindo leaned forward and said, "I just got thirteen hours of sleep. Deep, uninterrupted sleep. And I don't have to work until tomorrow!" He grinned. "How are you, Counselor?"
"In a better frame of mind" she smiled, "I thought the better of sitting alone in my quarters mulling over what I can't change so I thought I'd spend some time socialising"
"Is it possible the Counselor needs counseling?" said Mindo.
Aeryn smiled, "I guess I kind of do" she nodded, "either that or just a chance to let my hair down, maybe both" she picked up her glass and took another sip.
"Is this about Tyson?" Mindo asked.
"Who else?" she downed another sip of drink, "just when I thought we were going somewhere we're suddenly not anymore" she sighed, "I'm beginning to think I'm just not attractive to guys anymore."
"I'm not sure I'd go that far," said Mindo. Just then, his bottle of bourbon arrived. He opened it and poured himself a healthy dose. "You seem nice enough to me." He took a big gulp, then set his glass down on the table. Mindo eyed Aeryn a bit, "You definitely aren't lacking in the looks department." Mindo looked down at his chronometer. They should already be there, he thought. I told them I'd be late... what if...
Mindo took another drink and finished the glass, setting it down with a certain finality. "Counselor, we need a change," said Mindo. "Let me show you why 'Mindo' rhymes with 'fun.'" He grabbed the bottle of bourbon and hopped down from his seat, signaling for her to follow him. He activated his LEGs to reach her height and offered her his shoulder. "We're going to Little Caesar's."
Aeryn smiled and accepted Mindo's invite, she knew he had a reputation with the ladies but she also knew never to listen to rumours about anyone. "Lead on Mindo, let's go and have some fun."
They left the Box and walked (or hovered) the short distance to Mindo's own establishment, the giant video arcade and game room known as "Little Caesar's." The establishment was already a big attraction on the ship, sporting several different arcade games from Earth's twentieth century on the ground floor, and also an upstairs area with pool and air hockey tables, several pinball machines, and a few miscellaneous games like Ski-Ball, a favorite of Mindo's.
They went through the aisles of chittering video game cabinets with crazy bleep-blop sounds encompassing the room. They made their way past a couple of Science officers playing Tron and ascended the staircase, turning the corner and heading to the far wall, where two Engineers, backs turned to Mindo and Aeryn, bickered over the Ski-Ball ramp.
"Gentlemen," Mindo said, approaching Crewmen Zo and Greep. Zo held a wooden brown sphere in his hand and seemed to be shaking it at his blue feathered ape-like cohort, who had his arms crossed tightly against his chest.
Mindo cleared his throat again. "Gentlemen!" The two turned to look at Mindo. "I've brought us a guest for today's game off. This is Lieutenant Jameson, from Counseling. Counselor, these are my two subordinates, Chief Zo and Chief Greep."
Zo reached out his free hand in greeting.
Aeryn shook Zo's hand "pleased to meet you and you too" she nodded and smiled at Greep. "So what are we playing?"
"Ski-Ball," said Zo. "The idea is to roll these wooden balls up the ramp and try to get it into the highest hole possible."
Greep shook, and Mindo recognized this as a sign of anger or frustration. It took a long time to get used to Greep's little mannerisms, as they were nothing like a typical biped.
Greep squawked, "I'm trying to tell him he'll get the most points if he walks up the ramp and drops it in the highest hole. Why roll the ball?"
Zo huffed. "Because that's the rules of the game!" He handed a ball to Aeryn. "Here, give it a try. Just roll the ball."
Mindo nodded to Aeryn, encouraging her to try it. He took a drink from the bottle of bourbon he had brought with him.
"Sounds simple enough" she grinned and took the ball rolling it along the ramp with a little bit of force to see if it got her a good score. "How did I do?"
"Twenty points," said Zo. "Not bad for a beginner. But check this out." Zo made a fast roll up the ramp. The ball hit the rim of one of the holes and bounced into the corner 150 point slot.
"Show off," said Mindo with a grin.
Zo turned around to his jealous admirer and gave an exaggerated bow. Mindo merely scoffed.
Aeryn grinned, “Looks like I have a lot to learn! Let’s see you do it Mindo!” She smiled wearily as she looked at Mindo. “Show us how it’s done!”
"Well, alrighty," said Mindo, stepping forward, taking the ball Zo handed him. "Here goes nothing." Mindo launched the ball up the ramp. It hit the edge, bounced up, and fell through the first hole.
Zo laughed. "Ha ha! Gutter ball! Zero points!"
Mindo shook his head. "You don't have to rub it in, Chief. I guess Ski-Ball just isn't my thing."
“So how’s about you show me something you are good at?” Aeryn grinned as she looked at Mindo, “I’m sure there must be a game or something you can beat everyone else at doing.”
Mindo shrugged. "I did recently beat Nash's high score on Ms. Pac-Man," he admitted. "But I've got a better idea... something we could all do together."
Zo stepped in. "Mindo, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with... you know..."
Mindo sighed. "Why does everyone immediately assume that when I come up with an activity I'm talking about sex?"
"You usually are," said Greep.
"I want to play a drinking game," said Mindo. "It's kind of like truth or dare, but without the dare. It's called 'Never Have I Ever.'"
"Oh god," said Zo.
"This could be... interesting," said Greep.
"What do you think, Counselor?" said Mindo to Aeryn
"Depends on how much alcohol is involved" Aeryn smiled, "I don't handle alcohol very well" she shrugged her shoulders. "Oh hell let's try it!!"
Mindo clapped with excitement. "Great! Let's come over to the bar and I'll explain the rules. The game is called 'Never Have I Ever.' If you don't handle alcohol well, I advise getting a lite beer as it's not a good idea to drink hard liquor in this game. That said, I'll have a bottle of tranya," said Mindo to the holodeck bartender. A bottle of tranya from behind the bar was presented along with a glass. Mindo thanked the bartender. Zo ordered a bottle of Ba'ku Sunrise while Greep ordered Ontarion Nectar.
"I'll go with...something lite" Aeryn smiled as she took what the bartender offered and looked at the others. "Ready when you are."
"OK," said Mindo. "We've got our drinks. Now, here are the rules. We go around the circle taking turns saying 'Never have I ever,' followed by some action or activity that the speaker may or may not have done. For example, 'Never have I ever gone to the opera.' If you have done said thing, for example if you have gone to the opera, you take a drink. Then the next person says, 'Never have I ever,' and on and on. If someone says something you've never done, you do not take a drink. So if I said, 'Never have I ever served on a starship,' you would...?"
Aeryn picked up her glass and took a drink trying not to cough and look like an idiot infront of everyone. "So who is starting?"
"I'll start," said Mindo, "then you can go." Mindo cleared his throat. "Never have I ever gone camping."
Zo and Mindo took a drink. Greep did not.
Aeryn took another drink hoping she wasn't going to end up drinking to everything. "Okay..." she paused to think, "Never have I ever been to Risa" she looked at the others seeing what they were going to do.
Zo and Greep took a drink. Mindo did not.
Zo was next. "Never have I ever gone commando while on duty."
The group laughed. Mindo and Zo took a drink. Greep did not.
That was one Aeryn definitely didn't drink to. "Your turn again Mindo" she smiled as she looked in Mindo's direction she had to admit even the light drink was slowly starting to make her head spin but she didn't want to be a spoil sport and ruin the game.
"What about me?" said Greep.
"Oh I'm sorry Greep!! Please take your turn." She smiled.
"Never have I ever gotten drunk off one beer," said Greep.
Aeryn looked at the glass and took one more mouthful before having a coughing fit. She looked at Mindo apologetically, "Sorry Mindo....I really don't think....drinking games are totally suitable for me" she leant against a bar stool. "It's definitely been....fun though!" she looked at Mindo & offered a warm smile.
"Fair enough," said Mindo. "I certainly understand. What would you like to do now? Shall we part for the day or is there more to be done? If you're going on duty, I highly recommend drinking some water, just to help get the alcohol out of your system."
"Or we could keep playing and you could just drink water..." said Zo. Greep nodded in agreement.
Aeryn looked at Mindo she was strangely hoping for a little quiet time not game playing although he was trying to cheer her up after Tyson's departure. "I think I'd rather watch and see who wins!" she grinned.
So that's what happened.
