Captain Rao sat at his desk in his Ready Room on the USS Palatine as the Vesta Class Starship made her way through the Inconnu Expanse Expanse, reading over the latest reports and information that had been transmitted to them from the USS Pandora.
With his vessel having played a support role for the last few weeks now to Captain Nyx's Luna Class Starship, Tobias was beginning to feel that he understood his colleague more than they had at the beginning of this assignment. With this in mind, he was reviewing the personnel file of one of the crewmen that he was due to drop off to the Pandora: Crewman Kyper T'voren, a Vulcan researcher being assigned to the Science division.
Tobias decided he wanted to get to know T'voren a little better as he was concerned with an aspect of the Crewman's conduct that had recently been brought to his attention by his own Chief Science Officer, Lieutenant Wolf. Pressing the com button on his desk, Tobias sent out a call for T'voren to join him.
Whilst he waited for T'voren to arrive, Tobias also considered the mission of the Pandora, being the flagship vessel exploring the Inconnu Expanse Expanse and feeding back data to both the Palatine and Starfleet. It offered a spectacular chance for any member of Starfleet but it also required dedication to the cause.
T'voren was just sitting down at the small desk that was cramped into his temporary quarters when he got the page to report to the Ready Room. "Never a moment of rest," he grumbled to himself as he got back up, making sure not to put too much weight on his right leg.
Despite his best efforts, the movement caused a surge of pain to erupt through the torn and heavily scarred muscle tissues. "Son of a..." He groaned, using his hands to stabilize himself as he felt like collapsing back into the chair.
Grabbing his painkillers from his right jacket pocket and threw two small white tablets into his mouth. He felt momentary relief, as he knew the pills would soon do the trick. He grabbed his cane and limped out of his quarters, not bothering to change into any semblance of a regulation uniform. His jeans, short sleeve science crew top and leather jacket did little to bring over an air of professionalism.
Stopping outside the Ready Room, he played the chime, signalling to the Captain he was waiting.
Upon hearing the chime, Tobias looked up as he pressed the command for the doors to open and saw Crewman T'voren enter his office. He was a little surprised to see him out of uniform and with a cane.
Tobias stood up to greet T'voren. "Crewman, please come in, I'm glad you were able to meet with me," he explained as he noticed the cane. "Is everything alright?" he asked.
"Oh, this?" He asked, indicating his right leg, "It's nothing, just exercising the old bum leg. You wanted to see me?"
He glanced around the room as he asked the question, observing the room for clues as to the personality of the man before him. He could tell he was a career military man, having attained the rank of Captain. He took his job seriously, going so far as to personally vet the newest addition to the crew for the ship which his was supporting.
He knew his appearance was less than professional, and the fact that he used a cane had yet to make it into his personnel file, as the man seemed genuinely surprised at it's appearance.
Tobias gestured to a chair infront of his desk as T'voren explain his injury and returned to his own seat. He took a quick look at the latest update from Pandora on his PADD before continuing
"I did, I wanted to see how you were settling in on board whilst we get you to the Pandora," explained Tobias. "Whilst we're trying to chart the Inconnu Expanse, its still bloody difficult to travel in some days."
"I was also wondering if you had any concerns or questions about your position on Pandora as well?" he offered.
Kyper limped his way to the chair the Captain had indicated, but rather than sitting down, he put both hands on the back of the chair, taking more weight off his right leg. This served two functions: one, he was still able to look the Captain in the eye without craning his neck; and two, he wouldn't have to put more pressure on his right leg by standing back up later.
"Yeah. Since this isn't a luxury yacht, I'm guessing there's some work that needs to be done. So, I'm assuming, given that there's been no recent reports stating our proximity to the Pandora, that you're giving me a temporary work detail prior to our rendezvous with your sister ship." He surmised, speaking very matter-of-factly, "Just tell me I don't have to work with other people. The fact that they're usually idiots makes them rather difficult to work with "
Tobias sat back as he heard the Crewmans honest answer and considered his next response carefully. He noted his demeanour and honesty further.
"Tell me, Crewman, do you consider all Starfleet Officers and Enlisted colleagues... Idiots?" Tobias asked bluntly.
"Not all of them, no." T'voren answered, "I'm sure they've all gone to the Academy and are quite knowledgeable, however, I've never met one who didn't believe that they are always right. No exceptions. Sometimes it pays off for them, other times, they screw up. Badly."
Clearing his throat slightly and gripping the back of the chair he stood behind, he continued, " Physics isn't something to take at face value. You theorize, calculate, test, then prove. Most of the Enlisted crewmembers and a few of the Starfleet Officers I've worked with thus far have merely tested their theory to prove their calculations, not to prove the entire concept. That's why, in my eyes, they're idiots. Not because they don't know anything, but because they know a good amount of what I know and they're still wrong."
As he spoke he attempted to shift more of his weight to his left side, as the pain had been steadily creeping back into his right leg. Maybe he will sit down, in a moment or two.
Tobias smiled as T'voren answered his question honestly again. Whilst he could tell that this Crewman wasn't a fan of working alongside others, he was someone who wanted to get the job done right and see it through all the way to an end.
Tobias was impressed. "Well its good to know you want to do and always do a very thorough job," he explained. "That in itself makes you more committed than some Starfleet offficers I've served with."
With that, he got up and walked slowly round to the other side of the desk. "Knowing the Pandora crew as I do, meeting you has also made me realise that your an ideal fit for them. Lieutenants Brennan and Wakefield are working hard on all the information and data they compile on the Inconnu Expanse and need as much help as they can get," he expained before stopping next to T'voren.
"So, what would you say to having a shortcut added into your trip so we get you onboard as soon a possible?" He offered.
T'voren certainly perked up at that. Obviously, he'd have to personally test the Lieutenants that the Captain mentioned, make sure they were up to his standards. Not that he wanted to personally work with them, but chances are they'd be playing around with the data he sent them and he wanted to make sure that they wouldn't screw up his work.
"A shortcut, huh? Lemme check my schedule." He stood there with a sarcastically blank look on his face for a moment, "I suppose I'm free for a shortcut."
Tobias smiled again at the sarcasm T'voren displayed and realised that Nycolas would have his hands full with this one once onboard. He was also aware that the Luna Class Starship would need every hand they could get on board.
"Excellent," Tobias replied. "Whilst we're working our own way through the Expanse, we do have a small Corvette in the Shuttlebay that has some high speed abilities we've used before and I feel that we would be better placed to get you on board Pandora asap."
"If you make your way to the Shuttlebay, I'll arrange for your belongings to be transferred to the Corvette so that they are ready to launch as soon as you are," Tobias explained finally.
With a crisp salute bringing a semblance of professionalism briefly to his appearance, Kyper quickly exited the room. Well, as quickly as he could on a gimp leg.
A few turns down the winding halls of the Palatine, a turbolift ride and a wish for better pain meds later, Kyper arrived in the shuttle bay. The sleek outline of the corvette apparent as the shuttle crew loaded his belongings and performed pre-flight checks.
Approaching the flight control officer on duty, he cracked, "Like my new ride? Rao's letting me take her a for a spin to the Pandora."
The Corvette Pilot tilted his head to one side in disbelief at his new passengers claim. However after a quick conversation, confirmation of orders and identification later saw T'voren on his way to the Pandora, where he hoped he'd be able to work alone in peace.
