=====Engineering=====
Hovering in front of the Talarian trader, Mindo couldn't hide his curiosity. "Is there something I should know?" he asked the older man.
"Let me speak to your Captain first," said Rapal. "Everything will be made clear. I'm afraid my daughter and I have not been entirely honest with you."
"Would you like to explain?" said Mindo.
Rapal shook his head. "Not at this time. Don't worry, Mr. Mindo. Eventually you'll know that you are not in as much danger as you may think."
Mindo nodded a little. "That's only vaguely reassuring."
"It is all I can say," said Rapal as two security guards walked into Engineering.
"We are ready to escort you to the bridge," said one of the security officers.
Rapal nodded to Belaia.
"I'm coming too," she said.
Rapal smiled. "I knew you would." He looked back at Mindo, who gave a nod and watched as the four of them left the bridge.
As they left, Crewman Zo came from behind Mindo. "Chief, here is the report on the pattern buffer analysis you asked for."
"Thank you crewman," said Mindo, taking the PADD from Zo. "I'll look into it personally."
=====Bridge=====
Rapal and Belaia arrived on the Pandora's spacious bridge.
Nyx was standing at the Science station, huddled with an Ensign discussing sensor records from the Mendazian defense site. When a Security Officer announced the Talarian's arrival, the Captain was soon in front of them.
"We haven't much time." Nyx said as he approached, and indicated towards his Ready Room. "Please, come this way."
Nyx led the way into his office, moving quickly off the Bridge. Not only was he keen to hear what the father and daughter had to say, he wasn't comfortable having these strangers hanging around the Pandora's control center.
Once inside, Nyx chose to keep standing and turned to face their guests. "So, what can I do for you?"
"We are not Talarians," said Rapal. "We're Mendazians. From Salvaxe."
Nyx was taken aback, looking between the two standing in front of him. As a cadet, one always hoped to be present during first contact with an alien species. It was an auspicious and exciting occasion, harking back to the days of the old space explorers. As a Captain, Nyx had secretly dreamed of being a Starfleet commander who speaks with another race for the very first time. It was a special perk of the job that very few Captains were able to perform these days.
He was sure there was a speech he was supposed to say, something diginified and diplomatic. But the first contact had already occurred, and in fact the exciting occasion had previously happened in a shuttlecraft by the Chief Engineer.
Instead, Nyx just clapped his hands together and cried out, "I knew you weren't Talarians! I mean, I didn't guess Mendazians but I thought, 'They are far too nice to be Talarian', and I was right. But... how?"
"Allow me to explain," said Rapal. "Our planet is more technologically advanced that you initially thought. We have defensive capabilities, as you've seen, and we also are able to leave our planet with warp capability. We are a private people. We realize we are not in the safest part of space and thus created the dark matter anomalies to deter other races from invading."
Rapal continued. "I now see that your Federation's intentions toward our planet are sincere. You have gone out of your way to help my daughter and me and I believe you may be able to help Salvaxe as well. Now that the Ravagers have found our homeworld, I believe your presence would, in fact, be beneficial to us. I realize I have not been as receptive as I am now. But I had to know you were an honorable people first. My brother is a high-ranking official in our government, and I believe if we can talk to him, we may be able to help you navigate the dark matter if you agree to assist us."
Nyx sat down on the couch, though he more likely flopped onto it's cushioned emrace as he absorbed the information. "You... created the ghosts? The artificial anomaly in the nebula that brought those apparitions. It's a defense tactic to help protect Salvaxe?" He let out a long whistle. "Lieutenant Brennan is going to love seeing how you made it."
"I can offer no guarantees, but my brother does have influence in high places," said Rapal.
The Captain looked to Rapal and Belaia, a smile forming on his lips. "Well, this is good news. The Federation and the Mendazians working together. You have your defensive technology, and we have the Pandora. Those Ravagers don't stand a chance!"
Belaia sat down next to the Captain. "Captain, please understand this technology can't fall into the wrong hands. While my father and I have grown to trust you and your crew, we can't rest assured the Mendazian government will feel the same way."
"Of course." Nyx nodded, "We will do everything we can to respect your people's privacy and... Oh no."
Rapal and Belaia glanced at each other in confusion. "Is something wrong?" said Rapal.
Nyx stood, putting his hand to his mouth, "I've sent Lieutenant Griffin and a team down to the surface to recover the Ravagers and destroy their shuttle." He turned to Rapal with urgency. "What will your people do if they find either the Ravagers or Starfleet on your world?"
Belaia looked at Rapal wide-eyed, but Rapal held up a reassuring hand. "Captain, we are not savages, but we do what it takes to protect our world. It is likely your presence here is already known. I'm afraid my daughter and I must get to the surface as soon as possible. Your people may be in grave danger if they or the Ravagers meet us with any hostility."
Nyx still had so many questions, his entire idea of the Mendazians and this journey into the Expanse had changed so dramatically. He was still trying to mentally catch up minute to minute as everything developed in entirely unexpected ways. But now was not the time for more questions.
"Very well," Nyx replied finally, "I'll take you to the Transporter room now, there's no time to waste."
"Agreed," said Rapal.
Nyx held out his hand again and indicated to the main doorway that lead to the corridor. He only hoped they weren't too late.
