Emilie was aware of the commotion going on around her but she could only see Nyx, lying motionless in his bio-bed. Tests were done, theories were tried, readings were taken. He was alive and whole again, as if simply plucked from the Bridge at the moment before the wave hit and now returned to them a week later completely unharmed. If Emilie had been a religious woman she would have thanked some celestial being, but in reality Nyx's return had come from the tireless efforts of Nash, Mindo, Wakefield, and Brookes; none of them had given up the hope of finding the missing crew.
She leant her head again his shoulder, hearing his heart beat for the first time since he'd disappeared, hearing his steady breath in and out. His face looked completely calm and blank, as if denying the stress and pain Emilie knew he had been under. The empaths had been quite clear on what they felt from the missing crew while they were stuck wherever it was they disappeared to. They had faced significant trauma and deep sadness. Jameson had even mentioned a suicide attempt. This thought caused Emilie to grip onto her sleeping husband even tighter, wrapping her arms around him in a protective vice.
After a moment she allowed herself to relax her hold on him and she turned her head to look at his face once more. The Marine that had arrived back first showed no signs of consciousness, no clear thoughts that could be read, no response to external stimulus. She knew Nyx would be the same - comatose and vacant. The Doctors and Nurses had all but confirmed it with their tests. Still Emilie looked to him pleadingly, willing him to wake up.
"My love." She whispered. "My sweet, darling husband. If you can hear me, please give me some sign." Emilie held his hand in hers, and raised them up between their faces. "Squeeze my hand, Nyx. Please just squeeze my hand."
Emilie sat there for almost an hour, whispering and pleading for Nyx to respond. The Medical staff just let her be, they had done all they could already to test the Captain's consciousness and came up with nothing, but they wouldn't begrudge a partner from still trying. Word had come from the Transporter Rooms that more missing crew were likely to be recovered soon, so they got to work preparing beds for them too.
In time, Emilie gave a deep sigh, having felt no response from Nyx's hand at all. She received a message on her PADD that Katrine was due to be picked up from Daycare and she frowned. Emilie wondered if bringing little Katrine to see her father would be good for their young daughter or not. On one hand it would give Katrine great joy to see her father back safe and sound, but this would be quickly replaced by the resigned helplessness Emilie now felt knowing Nyx would not be awake to see them. Like he was here, but not really back. How could Emilie give her daughter that moment of happiness, knowing it would be ripped away again? As it had been ripped away from her.
"I don't know what to do." She whispered to Nyx, still holding onto his hand tightly. "I'm tired of being faced with these choices, tired of being a single parent when you're right here. It's too much." She tried to hold back the tears but a telling drop escaped her eyes and ran down her cheek.
Slowly Emilie replaced Nyx's hand by his side and stood up from the chair. She'd make a decision when she saw Katrine and go from there, that's the best she could do. With another deep sigh, she leant over and gave Nyx a long warm kiss on his forehead. "You're going to come back to us, my love." She whispered to him.
Silently she walked out of Sickbay and headed upstairs to retrieve Katrine, leaving Nyx lying quietly in his bed. Around him the Medical staff began running around, having heard of another successful extraction, and they quickly prepared themselves for the next arrival. A nurse arrived and started to move Nyx's bio-bed to the ward unit of Sickbay, gentling wheeling the sleeping Captain away. No one noticed that Nyx's right hand had balled together as he squeezed it tightly.
