It was all just a blurry selection of images. The garden. A bright light. The sickbay. Emilie. The garden. A bright light. The sickbay. Emilie. Over and over again these images were all that Nyx could see every time he opened his eyes for brief moments. He wanted to move and talk but found his body unresponsive. Sometimes the images of the Sickbay and Emilie would last a little bit longer than the others, but he could never be sure if he was actually seeing these things or just dreaming. Conscious and subconscious had merged together into a confusing mess.
Late one night, however, something came through stronger than the images. A voice. Her voice. It seemed to be close by as if Emilie was right by his side, talking to him and trying to tell him something important. Hearing the sorrowful tone in her voice, Nyx tried to open his eyes more, tried to reach out his hand. But his body was numb still, so he began mentally willing himself to move. He could feel her sitting by his right hand side, just near his abdomen, as the bio-bed sank a little where she was sat.
"I spoke to your mother today." Emilie was saying, "I didn't have the heart to tell her what had happened to you yet, so I used Katrine as a nice distraction." She sighed. "Your brother knows, though. He's on some diplomatic tour of the front lines and couldn't talk for long. He mentioned the Pandora might have to return to Federation space, so he could potentially come visit."
Nyx's fingers twitched, but on the opposite arm, not the one where Emilie was sitting near. He'd have to try harder. This wasn't a dream now, he was sure of it. He could feel her weight on the bed, her voice coming through loud and clear, the smell of her perfume lingering in the air. He had to reach her.
"Apparently there's going to be a Talent Show." Emilie continued slowly, talking now more for the sake of talking. "I could get Katrine to enter and sign that 'Hakuna Matata' song she's been obsessed with for a while. I suppose it's better than 'Let It Go', I wouldn't subject that onto the crew."
His hand raised now. Actually raised. Off the bed and into the air. For the first time in what seemed like a lifetime he was actually feeling something tangibly happen to his body under his own control. He was silently praying in his mind for Emilie to notice; or at least just stay by his side long enough for him to reach out to her. It would be a slow process, willing his body to move, but he had a goal now. He needed her to see him move.
Emilie unknowingly leaned forward a little, tiring from hearing just herself speak. She had been coming down to Sickbay every chance she could to watch over Nyx, talk to him, hope that something would change. She had seen and heard what another officer, Kaleri might have been her name, experienced after coming out of her coma and didn't want the same thing to happen to Nyx. She didn't want him to wake up alone and confused. Though really she just wanted him to wake up.
"Oh Nyx." Emilie sobbed a little, leaning off the bed. "I'm hearing terrible things from the returned crew. Absolute nightmare stuff. I can't imagine what you've been through."
The hand was moving across his body now, fingers achingly reaching out, hoping to touch Emilie's body. It was taking every ounce of his energy to make this movement happen, but he knew if he could make contact with her, or if she could see him move, then everything else would become effortlessly easy. He just wanted to hold her again, show her that he was awake.
"I told Katrine you were back but just asleep." Emilie said softly, rubbing her temples. "She wants to see you, of course, but I said you needed to sleep for a while. I don't know how much longer I can keep putting her off. She asks about you all the time." A tear fell down her cheek. "You're making a liar out of me, Nycolas Temple."
Nyx's brow furrowed, as he realised the pain Emilie must have been going through. It gave him the determination and the urgency to end this longing now. With a deep breath, he mustered all the energy he could and his hand finally reached Emilie's shoulder. He gripped it hard.
"Oh!" Emilie cried out, though as she quickly turned to see who was grabbing her, Nyx's hand fell back down by his side. Emilie looked behind her, expecting to see a visitor or someone, but there wasn't anyone there. She became deeply confused. Surely no one would have been trying to play games with her at this moment in time; none of the nurses or Medical staff would be that cruel. Yet she had definitely felt a strong hand on her shoulder and although no one was there.
Finally she looked down and saw Nyx's hand moving, trying to raise off the bed once more. Emilie's eyes widened with surprise and she quickly wrapped her hands around his. "Squeeze, Nyx. Please!" She begged. At her command, Nyx squeezed his hand firmly, causing Emilie to burst out in joyous tears. Though she remembered Doctor Brookes had mentioned sporadic muscle movements could occur in comatose patients, so she asked, "Again, Nyx! Twice this time."
Squeeze....
...Squeeze.
"Yes!" Emilie cried, holding his hand up to her lips and kissing it firmly. "You're awake!"
A tear fell from Nyx's closed eyes as well, as he could hear Emilie's excited words. It was suddenly as if his body had been pumped full of energy, like a floodgate had opened and he was determined to do more. He raised up his other hand this time, feeling the numbness washing away as he reached up and cupped the side of Emilie's face. He held both hands around her head now and pulled her gently towards him, Emilie leaning forward willingly until her lips met with his. He felt a wave of passion and relief as he embraced with Emilie, both husband and wife now crying out of pure joy. Emilie kissed him again and again.
She pulled back as Nyx slowly opened his eyes. The Bubble was gone; and so with it went the darkness, the emptiness, the loneliness he had felt without her. All he could see now was her; and his face beamed with pride.
"I've missed you." He tried to say, but it came out a hoarse whisper that could barely be heard.
"What?" Emilie said, her hands gripped onto his shoulder. "Oh!" She cried, realising he was trying to speak. She reached over to the side table where a jug of water had been placed for her. She filled up the cup, gently brought it to Nyx's mouth and slowly poured it in. Nyx swallowed gingerly, realising how parched his mouth had been. He smiled appreciatively to Emilie when he'd had enough and she returned to the cup to the table, before leaning into him again.
"I... missed... you.." He whispered.
Emilie smiled and kissed him once more. "Me too."
It was another half an hour before a nurse noticed that Nyx was awake, seeing him with his arms wrapped around Emilie. They had both been enjoying their reunion and embracing together, trying to make up for all that time apart. Of course the Medical Team had their job to do now, checking him over and making sure he was fully lucid. He barely looked at them as they asked their questions, all he could see was Emilie. That was all he ever wanted to see from now on.
