Mission: The Evils Within
Location: Pithos: Upper Science Laboratory
Timeline:
ON:
[Pithos Research Facility: Upper Science Laboratory]
Roderick was feeling sick to his stomach yet again. The harsh vibrations were telling the cells within his body that something ungodly was wrong deep down beneath within Helsioid Green. Declan didn’t agree. He didn’t have a voice to the matter. He was a Starfleet officer serving the best he could under the precarious situation that afforded.
“Why won’t they listen to us?!” Declan was astonished. He was both angry and anxious. He knew there was a whole population of native humanoid inhabitants. The scientists were continuing their experiments regardless of the petitions to Admiral Francis. He was a fraud and a fool.
A garbled transmission was crossed over his communicator, = Who is this? = Lieutenant Roderick, Chief Operations Officer of Pithos Research Facility demanded.
He was not security; however, at times, he felt like he was the only one awake trying to police operations both safe and… what he had suspected was Federation Black Ops intervention for months now. Whoever was in control didn’t give a rat behind to the crew on the ground.
= This is Lieutenant Roderick, Chief of Ops. Identify yourself. Immediately cease operations on this frequency. = He stressed.
Just then, the door behind Roderick came open, revealing the hefty frame of Admiral Gordon Francis. "Hello Lieutenant," he said, his voice deep and sounding a bit fatigued. "We have some... guests. Currently Commander Rothgan is dealing with them. I decided to come here personally to get your report while she is indisposed."
"Of course, Admiral Francis." Roderick always paid management the highest respect.
He handed the Admiral his usual OPS facility report for Pithos. While he did, a disconnect occurred within. Why did the brass management seem to ignore all the warning signs?
"Sir, you did not address my latest station vibrational stress report." He found himself not finding time for much small talk about getting to the point. The station was falling apart, and he discovered that entirely acceptable, at least in demeanor.
The Admiral glanced over the report for a few seconds, then looked at Lieutenant Roderick. "Lieutenant, you might want to look at the barrier generator output levels. According to this report, the shield density in region five is at a dangerous low. We don't want a collapse now do we? Perhaps you should be worrying about that instead of this planet's natural tectonic shifts." He handed the PADD back to Roderick and left just as abruptly as he had entered. Roderick didn't even get a chance to reply.
Slipping out and jarring his self in front of the older man, “Sir. With all due respect. I must protest! There are people out there!” Shouted Lieutenant Roderick. He was ashamed of the Admiral, and he was embarrassed at Starfleet for letting it happen. “The time to act is now.” He allowed an upturned lip to show his distaste.
"The local inhabitants. They aren't faring well, they're being hurt!"
The two men stood eye-to-eye, neither one willing to back down. The Admiral's demeanor was a calm one, but his patience for such insubordination was now running thin.
Suddenly, alarms started going off, and there was a loud noise like a giant roll of thunder. Admiral Francis looked over to Roderick's station and saw that, yes, the environmental shield in region five had collapsed. It appeared as though there were four people in the region now being exposed to the toxic condition of the planet's atmosphere. Unless something was done in the next five minutes, they were going to die.
"I believe you have more immediate problems right now, Lieutenant," the Admiral said. The interruption saved Roderick the embarrassment of a reprimand from an Admiral, and possibly even a court martial. But now was not the time to think of such things. If the region five shield had failed, there was a greater chance that the rest of the shield could follow.
Admiral Francis shuffled past Roderick. He now had other things to worry about as well. He left Roderick with the task of saving the facility.
Declan's face turned white, and a cold sweat. He had diabetes, and Roderick was in diabetic shock. He was the least worries right now. He had to get to the Lab and stop the vibrations. If the rumors were true, it was dark matter. "I did not sign up for this", and was "about to place my ass and his career on the line!" Roderick mumbled, rubbing through the thought process in the back of his mind, his dark hair entwined anxiously in his large fingers. Declan furrowed a brow, "I need a damn cold one."
He located the stash under his departmental desk and cracked it open. "About right.." Roderick then looked at his silver analog wristwatch. "So, if I die, it could be how long..." He mumbled... the energy capacity, the shipments of highly radioactive dark matter... " Yadda Yadda..." He laughed to himself. "Their such idiots!" He then let out a burp.
Lieutenant Roderick then left his office on his way to the underground complex. Entering the specialized Transporter Station at the top of the facility, it was heavily guarded. He had his credentials as A++. This allowed Chief access to underground and science experiments. However, large portions of the facility were off-limits for the Chief of Ops, Lieutenant Roderick. "Damn it." He had thought to his self trying to remember the intricate test scheduling.
The Pandora away team were still together when they came across the energised lieurenant in the corridor. The shuddering of the facility and the change of the lights to yellow made it clear that something was happening, but the rushing yellow-shirted lieutenant offered a sign as to where.
"Jameson, Smith," Cailus said, nodding towards where the man was going. "Go help him, and see if you can figure out what's going on. We'll find Francis."
“Yes Sir!” Aeryn nodded to James and headed off following the yellow-shirted officer down the corridor.
Tag Smith
“Lieutenant...” She called after the officer. “Wait!”
Roderick was confused. "Just who are you?" He questioned the Federation suits. "Your not officers at this complex." He knew. The clandestine facility had been warned of guests. As Ops, he had the foremost position to guard the facility and the lives there, keeping his hand at his side of his type II hand phaser.
“Declan? Declan Roderick?” Aeryn looked at the officer in surprise. “You don’t recognise me do you?” She smiled. “It’s Aeryn...am I that forgettable? We’re here to help you!”
"What?" He paused, confused. "Aeryn. Is that you?" Thoughts of long ago had arisen. Aeryn was a post assignment together at Dendron Prime.
"Help this place is falling apart?" He stressed. "You have to leave here immediately, your in Danger!" he shouted, mad. He was happy to see Aeryn, someone he knew, yet not on this planet. "the experiments. They've all gone out of their minds. We have to find a way to stop them." He stated to the rest of the Pandora Team.
Commander Rothgan noticed Cailus, Shae, and Alves going ahead. She turned to Aeryn and said, "I'm taking Alves and Shae to the lab while Commander Griffin is going to find the Admiral. I need for you, Lieutenant Smith, and Lieutenant Roderick to bring that failing shield back online! There are people suffocating who need your help!" She grabbed a gold-shirted Ensign passing by.
"This is Ensign Donovan," said Rothgan. "He'll take you to Sector 5."
The teams went their separate ways, as Roderick, Jameson, and Smith, hurried off to save those people in distress.
