Mission:
Into the Wild
Location: Sickbay
It was the morning of the Pandora's penultimate day in the Carnwennan Corridor, and ten days after their crisis with the Tzenkethi. The ship had gotten back to it's usual bright and cheerful hum, repairs had been dutifully made and completed, ready for them to face another challenge. However, not everything was back the same again. The significant difference being there was now a new Chief Medical Officer in the Sickbay; one that perhaps didn't expect the sudden promotion but had performed his duties faithfully and skilfully nonetheless. It had been on the Captain's mind since the crisis to ensure the doctor's efforts were given the recognition they deserved.
With this in mind, and a little black box in his hand, Commander Nycolas Temple made his way to Sickbay and to the Chief doctor's office.
In Sickbay, Machwen was having a pleasant conversation with Crewman Tannis about their lives in different parts of the world, "So before you joined Starfleet, you had never left the southern United States?" he asked Tannis,
"Not even once," Tannis replied, his accent making it more obvious.
It was then that Commander Temple walked in, prompting both officers to stand to attention,
"Captain, are you ill?" Machwen asked.
Smiling at the doctor's comment, Nyx shook his head, "No, thank you, Mr. Adaestron, but I have an announcement for yourself and your team if you could be so kind as to gather everyone for me?"
"Of course, Commander," Machwen responded, before going around the various rooms that the other medical officers were in, whist others at their desks stood up and walked over to where Tannis was standing.
Nyx looked around as the Medical team stood up and then cleared his throat, "Firstly, I wanted to thank you for your work during the Tzenkethi crisis. I know I've said this a few times already but I believe you all handled yourselves excellently and it means a lot to me as Captain, to see the ship performing so well. I really am proud of you."
He gave a moment with a respectful nod before he continued, "Now we must also recognise that we left Earth with Lieutenant Kolbeck heading this Department and unfortunately due to the battle, we have lost him as our crewmate and Chief Medical Officer. However, I have heard from Carnwennan Station today and I'm sure you will be pleased to know he is recovering very well; his wounds are healing quickly and he's already giving their Sickbay plenty of helpful bedside advice."
"Seems like he's his cheery self then!" someone called out from the small crowd.
Nyx smiled, "And thankfully, we have Mr. Adaestron here, who has proven himself capable and exceptionally suited for the role of your Chief. In recognition of his elevation to CMO, and in light of his dynamic performance during the crisis, it is my honour today to grant him a promotion in rank to Lieutenant Junior Grade."
Machwen was speechless - literally. From the shock, he forgot about not being around other telepaths, and said, mentally, "Thank you so much Commander," before remembering where he was, "Thank you so much, this is too much!" he repeated, though this time he said it physically.
It was so pleasing to Nyx to see the gratitude and warmth from the young officer, and this brought a broader smile to the Captain's face. "Not at all too much, Lieutenant, but in fact entirely deserved."
Hearing himself be referred to as Lieutenant made Machwen grin in happiness. He walked over to the Commander and held his hand out to shake, "Thank you, Commander, again,"
Nyx reached out and received Machwen's handshake, before giving a firm smile. He opened the little black box he had been holding during this meeting and revealed the shiny black pip inside. Indicating to the Doctor to present himself forward to receive the pip, Nyx carefully pinned the new rank onto the collar of his uniform.
"Congratulations, Lieutenant." Nyx exclaimed as he stood back again and initiated a round of applause, which the Medical team dutifully joined.
