Aoife sat on the bed next to Shae, patting at her mother's shoulder. With a groan, Shae woke and peeled her face away from the warmth and comfort of her pillow, cracking her eyes open to see who was touching her. Shae could only guess if Cailus had left Aoife on the bed or if the ambitious child had climbed up here on her own, but there she was, smiling at Shae with a chirp.
"It is way too early for you to be so cheerful, little one," Shae remarked grumpily, then yawned. It was then that she noticed the splitting agony in her skull. Stars above, this was a hangover?! Why did people willingly do this to themselves if they knew this was what they were in for the next morning?!
It wasn't that her reaction to her drunken state was all that bad; her metabolism was able to burn through the alcohol pretty quickly with fairly minimal side effects, but the real problem came with her exceptional hearing. Though minimal, the effects of her hangover made sounds painfully loud! Everything from the thrum of plasma through the conduits in the walls to her own heartbeat, it all pounded in her head until she couldn't even think. This sucked, why did people do this to themselves!
Having heard her words, Cailus appeared at the open bedroom door, already wearing his duty uniform and smiling tolerantly.
“Good morning,” he said in greeting, keeping his voice low. “How are you feeling?”
"Why didn't I stop after the first cup?" Shae groaned as she buried her face back into her pillow. "This sucks!" she declared with a soft canine whine.
Cailus grinned, plainly trying hard not to laugh, especially as Aoife patted her mother’s shoulder in sympathy. “Yes, it does. That’s your body’s way of reminding you when you do something really, really stupid...like trying to match drinks with a Klingon.”
He disappeared for a few moments and soon he was back, this time with a tray laden with breakfast. “Come on, now, sit up. You’ll feel better in a bit.”
The breakfast was rather unfamiliar to Shae, who quickly lifted her head once again to explore the unusual scents. There was a strange looking omelet and a bowl of rice and some kind of... soup? She knew Cailus liked Japanese foods, and she had been enjoying trying new things (who was she kidding, she was now addicted to sushi and Japanese sweets), but she had never seen or smelled anything quite like that soup.
"Uhh, Cailus?" Shae said as she propped herself up on her elbows. "What is this?" she asked.
Cailus laid the tray across Shae’s lap, extending the supports so it would stand securely, then frowned as he looked to see what she meant.
“Miso soup,” he said in confusion, than realisation dawned. “Oh, right, you haven’t...it’s just a Japanese soup, a mishmash of things. This combination is perfect for a hangover.”
"You brought me a Harriet breakfast out of habit, didn't you?" Shae said with a weak grin, though not weak out of any jealousy, she just felt like steamrolled crap right now. "You know, if my head wasn't threatening to cave in under all the pounding noise, I'd probably laugh at this," she added as she sat up and got herself situated, then picked up the bowl to give it a curious sniff. "It smells good," she said approvingly, then sipped gingerly at the concoction, and the resulting smile assured Cailus that he was not in any hot water. As she sipped at the soup, she watched Aoife's little nose working overtime as she child scooted closer to see what mommy was eating. "You want to try some?" Shae said to Aoife, then held the bowl out to help the child drink. "Cailus, you might need to get another bowl of this for her," she added with a soft chuckle when Aoife held onto the bowl for more.
“Indeed,” Cailus said drily. Sure enough, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, he was back in less than a minute with another bowl of miso soup, setting it down on an empty corner of Shae’s tray. Bowing to the inevitable, he simply climbed onto the bed next to Aoife to help her eat it so that Shae could attend to her own breakfast.
“Do you remember much of yesterday?” he asked softly, gently guiding Aoife into eating from the new bowl.
"Uhhh..." Shae blinked with some befuddlement as she thought back to last night. "I know that I need to go find a certain Senior Chief Petty Officer and offer an apology," she said, then continued to sip at her miso soup, cracking a small smile at how Aoife slurped noisily from her own bowl. "I don't know, a lot of it is quite fuzzy.... I remember being super happy about... something... and then I was sad, but I can't for the life of me remember why. It's strange, I can close my eyes and I remember you sitting beside me on the bed talking to me, but the words are so distant and garbled; indecipherable, really."
“We talked about a few things,” Cailus said vaguely, keeping his eyes on Aoife to make sure she didn’t turn the bed into a disaster zone, taking care to conceal a sigh of relief. He didn’t regret the words spoken the previous day, nor did he begrudge her for them, but damn, he was glad that she didn’t remember. Shae’s guilt would’ve torn her up inside.
Still...
Shaking off that idle thought, Cailus glanced at her with a faintly teasing look in his eye. “I was actually asking whether you remember running into anyone besides the Chief. When he found you, you were a little...”
"Oh my stars, my uniform!" Shae exclaimed with wide-eyed surprise, bringing a hand to her cheeks as if to conceal the growing color as she blushed in embarrassment. "Oh no, I think I came across at least one other person before the Chief! A-and my uniform, were you able to find it?"
“No,” Cailus said, this time managing to sound a little sorrowful. “Aoife and I looked after I put you to bed, but someone must’ve up.”
"Oh no, what am I going to do?!" Shae asked. "There was a PaDD with reports in my jacket, and my communicator... My communicator! Call for me and see if anyone answers!"
Quirking an eyebrow, Cailus duly tapped his combadge. “Griffin to Brennan.”
A few seconds of silence passed, with only Aoife’s slurping to fill the vacuum as she attacked the last of her soup. Cailus looked at Shae, meeting her nervousness with a reassuring smile, before finally the communicator answered.
=/\=Good morning, Lieutenant!=/\= came the warm, cheerful reply. =/\=This is Huyo, down in the Box. I believe that I have several of Shae’s things down here. A thoughtful young ensign brought them by last night.=/\=
"Miss Huyo, thank goodness!" Shae exclaimed with relief; that woman was a life-saver!
=/\=Oh, hello Shae!=/\= Huyo said happily. =/\=I’m glad to hear you got home alright after last night, I was rather concerned. Would you like to pick up your things at lunch?=/\=
Shae could replicate a new shirt and jacket, but she would definitely need her rank and communicator to report for duty... "No no, I'll be around to pick them up before my duty shift, which I think I'm going to be late for if I don't hurry up," she replied. "Miss Huyo, if you ever see me drinking something like War Nog again, please stop me. I cannot make a fool of myself like that again!"
The sound of soft laughter came from the combadge. =/\=Oh hun, everyone says that to me at one time or another. I’ll be right at the bar when you come by.=/\=
His smile having remained for the entire exchange, Cailus took over. “Thank you, Huyo. Griffin out.” Tapping his combadge to end the call, Cailus looked to Shae. “Well, that’s that.”
Though Shae was relieved that Miss Huyo had taken care of her things, she was still quite red with embarrassment. "Oh stars, this is so embarrassing...." Shae said with a sigh. She looked at the remains of her breakfast; it had been really good and if she substituted the bowl of rice for a bowl of fruit then she could easily make this one of her regular morning meals, and the soup had helped her feel so much better! Her head was still pounding a bit, there was no avoiding the fact that she was most likely going to be a bit miserable today, but at the very least she felt like she had the energy to tackle the day! "I guess I should go take a shower and get ready for my shift... Do you think that tonight we can talk about what I said last night? I'm still drawing a blank, but I can't shake the feeling that it had been something important!"
“It was,” Cailus said simply with his usual calmness. He leaned over and kissed the side of her head affectionately before getting up off the bed, and taking the tray with him, he disappeared into the main room.
Shae blinked as she watched him walk away; she honestly didn't know how to process his response, so after a moment she gave Aoife a loving nuzzle then finally got out of bet to get ready for the day.
But seriously, what the frak had they talked about?!
