= Carnage - Bridge =
Nyx hobbled out of the captain's quarters, with the information he had gleamed from the Ravager's database in his hand, and a noticeable strain on his injured leg. He breathed heavily and leaned hard against one of the Bridge consoles, just enough so one of the Marines standing watch would notice.
"Sir, are you alright?" Came the concerned tone of 1st Lieutenant Arnaldo.
Nyx groaned, "The Ravager captain tried to escape, I had to... defend myself."
Arnaldo's eyes grew wide at the news and he gave darting looks to the quarters. "What happened, sir?"
"He broke free from his restraints and tackled me." Nyx reported, labouring his breathing. "My only option was to remove the oxygen tubes on his mask, hoping that would slow him down."
The young officer immediately went to tap his badge. =/\= Bridge watch to... =/\=
"Wait." Nyx coughed, giving a strained expression. "No need to worry about calling in support. He's dead, turns out those tubes weren't just for show."
"Oh." The Lieutenant replied, realising the gravity of the situation. He straightened up his back, "You had to defend yourself, sir."
"Yeah." Nyx sighed, "So we don't need Security, we just need Medical to transport him to the Pandora's morgue."
The Lieutenant's eyes darted back and forth between the Captain and the doorway once more. "Right." He said slowly. "Are you sure you don't want me to check on him, sir? He could have just been knocked unconscious?"
Nyx raised himself up again and shrugged, "If you like, Lieutenant, but if you go in there before the Medical crew, you'll have to take responsibility as the first responder." He eyed off the young Marine carefully. "It just means a lot of paperwork for you, reporting on the scene, confirming the situation."
The Marine took a second and nodded, "That's affirmative, sir, I understand protocol. Besides, you're in no shape to worry about that. You should get back to the Pandora already."
"Yes," Nyx said plainly. "I need to get this leg checked out. But I should stay, it's my job, not yours."
"Sir, I insist." Arnaldo replied firmly. "I will check on the body and report it in to Medical."
"Very well." Nyx gave him a half-salute and started to hobble off towards the doorway. "Be sure to add that I will have a full debrief of what happened tomorrow morning."
"Sir, yes sir." The Marine diligently replied. "Permission to speak freely?"
Nyx stopped and raised an eyebrow. "Go on?"
"It was a mistake to leave you alone with Balek in the first place." He responded, raising up his head and speaking in a forthright tone. "He could have seriously hurt you, sir, or worse."
"I agree." Nyx replied, "But it was more important that we caught the rest of the Ravagers trying to escape the Carnage. And I was able to handle myself. Apparently just a little too well."
"Understood, sir." The Marine nodded back. "Just thought it should be noted."
"Thank you, Lieutenant." Nyx said, "I appreciate your honesty. I'm going to head back to the Pandora now, and finally get off this damned ship."
"Hasta la vista, as my people say." Arnaldo responded with a slight grin.
Nyx couldn't smile yet, so he just nodded softly. "Sure."
= Sickbay - Later =
The Captain cast a forlorn figure as he sat on the bio-bed in Sickbay, as nurses and medics attended to his leg. He was lucky to be alive, of course, and had Balek the Butcher been a little less egotistical, he probably would have been dead. Having said that, he had still come out of their encounter with the Ravagers with a twisted shard of metal shot through his lower leg, but he told himself it could have been worse. He'd received some emergency treatment on the Carnage but given the arrow had pierced all the way through his limb, there was more work to be done to repair the damage. And then there was the emotional trauma of the day, but that would have to be dealt with later.
“Captain Temple…” Tyson viewed the Captain figure before him laying on the emergency biobed. The Captain was ushered into Sick Bay after having been a prisoner on the Ravagers vessel.
Crewman Tannis rolled over the medical cart, holding various instruments and scanners for general use. Brookes nodded at Tannis having brought the correct materials as he then stated. “Crewman Tannis set up a taccachardial thigh veinous mapping scan.”
Tyson sided up beside the Captain’s biobed, “Captain, I need you to tell me where the most pain your experiencing.”
Nyx tried a pleasant smile to the new Chief Medical Officer but given his state, it was half-hearted at best. "The medics did a quick patch up on the Carnage, so it's mostly a dull burning pain at the moment. But I can't walk on it, that is unbearable."
Tyson nodded which had seemed correct with arrow shrapnel being shot through Captain Temples left sided leg. “The scans are showing me that you have multiple fractures from the shrapnel. This is not a simple extraction operation Sir.” Brookes pulled up his medical tricorder, punching a few buttons into it. He then rubbed his hand on his forehead, shaking it, looking over the microfractures…. “Awwww Man! That is grody to the max!” He shook his head.
“We’ve got you covered Sir.” He could see the amount of pain that Captain Temple was holding back, not wanting to show weakness. Even after having been held and captured and god knows what else on the Ravager’s ship with Balek, the leader.
Assistant Chief of Medical Lt. Adaestron then sided up by Brookes handing him a hypospray. Tyson received the instrument and stated “sir, I’ve got some excellent stuff here… Going to help you deal with the burning nerve pains in your leg. We’re going to need to operate on your leg.”
Nyx nodded and leaned back in his bed, "Do you think there will be any permanent damage?"
"Not at all Sir," Tyson then pressed the hypo-spray into Captain Temples neck. The sensation of falling asleep slowly passing him into oblivion for the short operation. Brookes had no time to waste as the Captain's leg was already bleeding internally and any nerves could be compromised.
As Nyx was becoming 'high as a kite' slowly Tyson then turned to Emilie Temple. "He will be fine. His leg should recover quite well. The neural damage can be repaired..." Brookes then scanned the leg with the tricorder.
Emilie had appeared silently in the background and been waiting quietly so as not to disturb the proceedings. She wasn't even sure if Nyx had seen her yet, he hadn't appeared to have noticed. Her face was ashen and blank, and she just nodded to the Doctor in response.
"Computer initiate trauma stasis field level two around subjects left leg." The computer responded. The ceiling sensor clusters working from above the bio bed.
"Computer initiate vascular, tissue cellular migration level, 80%." Tyson further called out orders to the main computer.
=/\= Acceleration of neuron trans trioxide inhibitors actuating... =/\= The computer had begun regenerating the varying levels of tissue to Captain Temple's leg on the bio bed. Tyson then placed on the leg wound a small portable substrate transporter, a surgical option for removing shrapnel and other objects within the humanoid body.
"The shrapnel is being cleared and transported outside of his wound." Tyson was looking at the computer screen nearby the bio bed, the status display showing the metal particles slowly being removed from inside the deep wound.
"Emilie it is important to know that the Captain, Nycolas, will not be 100%. He will need a few weeks of slow eventual recovery of his leg. The muscles are still atrophied, even though they are repaired and full working order, the Captain will need to favour his leg."
"I understand." Emilie replied, her hands gripping together. Was it nerves over the procedure or anger? It was getting hard to tell. She muttered something to herself but here eyes remained fixed on the procedure.
"Emilie?" Nyx called out, his voice higher pitched than normal as the sedatives sent him loopy. "I don't need a new leg because I have her. Love that chick."
Emilie put on a polite smile and she shook her head at the medics. "I assume this is the tranquillisers in effect?"
"He is about as chill as Dairy Queen about now.." Tyson chuckled. He had integrated a graphical interface that was holographic generating neural repair pathways in Nyx leg. "Er, Yes Ma'am." He caught his self. "The Captain is quite comfortable right now." He then grinned at Emilie a slight bit at the Captain's sedated state.
After what seemed forever, Brookes had completed transversing the repairs of connective tissues aided by the Sick Bay's main computer sensor clusters. He paused and checked through the results, having the computer check his own handiwork with the transdermal and thermoscopic tools.
=/\= Physiologic, Neurologic pathways and transverse connective tissue is 98.3% repaired as per original neuro scan 001 =/\= The computer comfirmed that the Captain's right leg was indeed fixed as far as the technology could assist.
"Captain Temple’s leg has been thoroughly repaired as far as I can with technology. He had a very nasty gash in his leg." Brookes stated. "Although, he will need to favor his leg. I can offer him a crutch..." Brookes looked at Nyx. "Somehow I don't think a crutch is our Captain's style tho."
"I will wake him now. I am sure you would like to speak to him. His sedated effects should wear off."
“Thank you, Doctor,” Emilie replied softly, giving the young officer a grateful smile.
Brookes then took a hypo spray from the nearby cart and slided a vial into it. He then adjusted the dosage that was then sprayed into the Captain's neck, waking him up...
His head felt like it was stuffed with marshmallows, and it took Nyx a few seconds of blinking slowly for his brain to catch up with his surroundings. He had been having a marvellous dream about ice cream for some reason, and was still trying to adjust to being in the bright lights of Sickbay.
"Crewman.." Brookes called over Tannis. "Can you kindly please bring Emilie a blanket and comfortable seat." She was seated beside the bio bed with Nyx.
"Yes sir." The crewman left to return and set up a chair and warm blanket.
“Thanks.” Emilie said shortly, her eyes still focused on Nyx. She was watching him intently, trying not get too emotional.
Brooke let his self be absent for the two Temples as he left to attend some of the other occuring incidents now that he had arrived from the Palatine.
Now fully awake again, Nyx turned to see Emilie and he smiled widely at her. “Hey.” He said softly.
Emilie stared back at him, eyes starting to brim with tears for a moment, but her face remaining blank and restrained. She was clearly tensing her body now as if she wasn’t sure how to act. Her hands remained by her side, even as Nyx reached out from the bio bed to hold her.
And then... SLAP! The sound of skin hitting skin echoed across the Sickbay as Emilie had raised her own hand and brought it hard across Nyx’s face. Emilie stood from her seat, the blanket falling to the ground, as her relief at seeing Nyx alive and well had quickly given way to her anger. “How dare you!”
“Em!” Nyx cried, holding his face in surprise. “What the hell?”
“You could have been killed, Nycolas!” Emilie immediately hissed back. “Don’t you ‘hey’ me! Don’t you even sit there and not apologise for what you put me through!”
“I... had to...” Nyx offered plainly, still reeling. It had been a long drop from marshmallows to the hot stinging sensation on his cheek.
“Stop.” Emilie growled. “You promised me that life on the Pandora would be safe, that I wouldn’t have to worry about you disappearing on covert missions now that you were Captain, that I wouldn’t spend my days worrying about where you were like I used to. And the first opportunity you get, you’re jumping into some dangerous job on an unknown alien battleship?! How DARE you not apologise immediately to me.”
Nyx gave a nod, his eyes full of regret to his wife, “I’m sorry, Emilie. I really am. Please, I don't need this right now, you don't know what I've just been through.”
“Then you should have told me what was happening.” Emilie shot back, unrelenting, “Instead, after hours of not knowing where you were or even if you were still alive, I had to find out from Cailus. Not from my husband, even though you had the opportunity to tell me. No, Nycolas, not good enough!”
The Captain just sat weakly in his bed, his mind still reeling from the slap and his body tired from the long and painful day. He wanted to discuss his point of view with Emilie but he could tell she wasn’t in the mood for his explanations right now. He had to take the brunt of her anger, for what he’d put her through.
“I’m happy you’re okay.” Emilie said through a sigh. “I’ll let you rest now and I’ll bring Katrine in to see you before you’re discharged. But we need to discuss this, Nyx.”
Emilie leaned over and kissed her husband on his red cheek. Of course she regretted slapping him now, and his ashen face was bringing her only more anguish. But it was the release of the entire day’s worth of fear and anguish that she had been put through. Though she was beginning to wonder if she hadn’t just made everything worse.
“I am sorry.” Nyx spoke softly.
“Me too.” Emilie replied, before giving his hand a squeeze and walking away.
Nyx sat back in his bed again, feeling the hot sting on his face. Elsewhere, he could see the Medical crews receiving the report on Balek's death as they hurried about preparing to leave for the Carnage. At least that was one problem out of the way.
