By any reasonable measure, the situation that the Pandora crew faced was catastrophic. The decks were reduced to emergency lighting, all communications and displays were offline and even the doors could only be opened manually. Life support and artificial gravity were still functioning, providing a modicum of comfort that the crew wouldn’t suffocate, but that was more than offset by what the crew could see outside the viewports.

Specifically, nothing. Nothing at all. It was as if a cloud of complete darkness had settled around the starship, concealing everything outside the hull. Nobody could even see the the rest of the saucer section or the Pandora’s great nacelles, leaving an uncomfortable feeling of uncertainty about the status of the rest of the ship.

Room by room on Deck 2, Lieutenant Griffin and Ensign Yugrid swept through and checked in with various trapped officers, but despite the troubling situation, everyone was staying remarkably calm. Even Yugrid, a young Tellarite girl who had graduated from the Academy only two months prior, was showing remarkable courage. The ship was completely dead, drifting in some unidentifiable blackness with everyone isolated and alone, but there was no panic as Cailus and Yugrid checked everyone, no worry. They were Starfleet; such calamity in the face of the unknown was simply another Tuesday.

“Still nothing on your tricorder, Ensign?” Cailus asked the young woman as they made their way down the darkened hall, shining their palm beacons to light their way. The security chief’s left arm was still broken, the only treatment having been to put it in an improvised sling, but he showed no sign of slowing down.

“No, lieutenant,” Yugrid replied evenly, keeping a close eye on her tricorder’s display as they walked. “I’m still not detecting anything below Deck 3. The last group of lifesigns on Deck 2 are a few meters ahead, around the next bend.”

Around the corner, Machwen was just about standing up. "I think I hit my head, it hurts quite a bit," he told the other two with him, First Lieutenant Mauricio and nurse Louis, rubbing his head at the same time, "whereabouts are we?"

“Deck two.” Mauricio answered shortly. He held up his hand as there were voices in the distance. The Marine ducked down low and quickly shuffled to the corner. “I think I hear people coming.”

Mauricio flashed his beacon a few times up the corridor, waiting to see if there was a response.

Responding to the flashing with their own steady lights, Cailus and Yugrid stopped in the middle of the hall, their hands hovering over their phasers more from habit than concern. “This is Lieutenant Griffin, Security,” Cailus called out with his deep voice. “Identify yourself.”

“First Lieutenant Arnaldo here.” Mauricio called out. “I have Lieutenant Adeastron and Nurse Louis with me.”

With that tense formality done, Cailus and Yugrid approached Mauricio and the others, the lights moving over the group with careful examination. Without prompting, the Tellarite ensign took off her backpack and began handing out more palm beacons. She had been acting as an equipment mule ever since they’d raided a supply closet.

“Are any of you injured?” Cailus asked sternly, looking over the three of them with his usual coldness.

Mauricio stepped forward, giving the Security Chief a dutiful salute. "Semper Fi, Lieutenant. No major injuries. Bumps and bruises but we're functional. Have you seen anyone else?"

“Seven on this deck besides you three,” Cailus replied curtly, flashing his light down the hall beyond the Marine, where only the turbolift shaft lay. The security chief was already dreading the climb down to Deck 3, but he was careful not to show it. “The Bridge crew are uninjured for the most part, but we are completely without power or communications. We are operating on blue alert for the time being, running a deck by deck sweep.”

Louis stepped forward and glanced at Cailus’ arm, “You shouldn’t be climbing anywhere with that arm” he looked at Adaestron, “I think you should take a look Lieutenant”

Machwen reached around to his belt, luckily his tricorder was still there. He scanned it along Cailus' arm, and looked at the readings. "That's definitely broken," he told Cailus, "make sure that it's held up until we're able to get you to sick bay, and get it sorted."

"I'll head back to the Bridge and see what's happening." Mauricio said. "And if they've found more medical supplies, I'll get them back to you."

Louis nodded he had to admit he was somewhat out of his depth in this situation but that didn't mean he intended to stand around and look useless "I'll come with you, they may be needing a medic and right now we're both down here" he nodded to Machwen and made his way over to Mauricio.

Accepting Machwen’s field treatment with ill humour, Cailus locked eyes with Mauricio, shaking his head in the torchlight. “Belay that, lieutenant. You will join us in a search party for Deck 3. Ensign Yugrid, you will report to the Bridge and inform Captain Temple of what we have found on this deck. Tell him that I suggest we use the turbolift shaft as a temporary means of transit and communication between decks until we get comms back.”

The Tellarite ensign nodded earnestly, taking off her backpack of supplies. “Aye sir, on my way,” she said eagerly before darting off down the corridor towards the turbolift shaft with all the enthusiasm of a puppy.

Sighing, Cailus glanced at the others. “That’s our cue to get moving, gentlemen.” The security chief winced as Machwen as gently eased his broken arm into a better sling, but otherwise didn’t complain, simply scowling at Mauricio. “El-tee, take point.”

"Sir!" Mauricio answered swiftly and immediately moved to the front of the group, his beacon lighting the way forward. Now that he had a plan, a directive to follow, he was keen to enact it quickly.

Moving out with the others Louis hoped he'd soon be back in sickbay helping with the wounded, at least there he felt more in control rather than feeling lost.

The group continued to move through the corridors, hoping they would find more survivors and hopefully, some answers.
